The Brushtail Possum is an Australian marsupial introduced to New Zealand in 1837 by the first settlers. They bred uncontrollably for over 100 years. They have no natural enemies and cause enormous damage to the forests and native wildlife.
Possums ruthlessly eat fruits, tree shoots, bird eggs, and chicks and within a few decades managed to drive many native species to the brink of extinction. The possums destroy the unique ecological balance of New Zealand. To protect the threatened flora and fauna, the country's government endorses controlled hunting to reduce the population of Brushtail Possums. The resulting pelts would otherwise go to waste.
